Akselos named as top innovator in the energy transition

17th April 2018

SET, an initiative by the German Energy Agency (DENA) and the World Energy Council (WEC), has named a leading digital twin developer among the top 100 young companies and new projects contributing to the energy transition.

Digital twin of a wind turbine

Digital transformation company, Akselos, was recognised in the top 100 list thanks to the company’s ability to reduce the cost of wind energy, and to help secure the stability of supply with next generation digital technology.

The Swiss headquartered MIT spin-out has combined its engineering simulation technology with sensors, big data analytics and machine learning to create predictive digital twins. The patented tech seeks to help streamline the design and build of turbines, support structures and transmission systems to help lower the cost to consumers. It also optimises operations throughout the lifecycle by offering operators real time access to the condition of the assets, as well as predictions about their future condition.

Commenting on the award, CEO Thomas Leurent said: “Technology is nothing without a purpose and ours has always been to contribute towards a sustainable future. Technology development is central to accelerating the energy transition and the SET is a crucial platform to help focus innovation in the right areas, so we can make world-wide low carbon energy a reality. We are very pleased to be named in the SET 100 list and look forward to working with the other innovators and organisations in the network to support the transition.”

Akselos has already been recognised as a game-changer in the offshore oil and gas industry, having created the world’s largest predictive digital twin of a 90,000 ton FPSO. The company’s MIT licensed product is the only technology on the market capable of simulating twins of large-scale structures, with the level of detail and accuracy needed to enable predictive maintenance.

DENA and the WEC launched the sustainable energy initiative at the annual UN Climate Change Conference in 2016.

The SET 2018 Tech Festival took place on 16 April in Berlin. The one-day event acts as the summit of the SET initiative, enabling participants to access a wide range of outstanding entrepreneurs and start-ups that are working to transform energy systems of the future.
