GSP Offshore reported third offshore drilling rig has started for PEMEX in the Gulf of Mexico

GSP Offshore, a Romania-based drilling contractor, has announced that its third offshore drilling rig or Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) has commenced for PEMEX in the Gulf of Mexico.

The GSP Fortuna jack-up rig initiated drilling operations under an 894-day contract with Mexico’s state-owned oil company PEMEX.  GSP Fortuna is a three legs cantilever type self-elevating unit of Friede & Goldman L-780 Model II design.

At the start of the long-term contract with PEMEX, GSP Fortuna was appointed to drilling operations in Dos Bocas field.

Currently GSP operates in the Gulf of Mexico with three MODUS, which include GSP Atlas, GSP Fortuna and GSP Orizont. The first two GSP MODUs, GSP Atlas and GSP Orizont started the drilling project in the Gulf of Mexico back in 2011.

In order to support the offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico, GSP has established the representative office, GSP Offshore Mexico, as well as an operational base in Ciudad del Carmen, which will provide local coordination and support for all Mexican offshore operations.

Before this project, the GSP Fortuna carried out a drilling campaign in the Kavala Gulf, in the Prinos oil field in northern Greece for Energean Oil & Gas.

Swiber and Spain's Dragados Offshore were also previously awarded a contract in October 2013 to lay pipeline in Dos Bocas, which was worth nearly $200million.

The project involved Dragados laying 38km of pipelines, which linked production platforms in the shallow-water Xanab and Yaxche oil fields in the Bay of Campeche to the Dos Bocas marine terminal in Paraíso, Tabasco state, in the Gulf of Mexico.
